Top Online Video Creators Across Social: October 2016

Liza Koshy's ready for her holiday party with YouTube Red's 'Jingle Ballin''

LOS ANGELES - Home Alone and the holidays.
Those are two of digital star Liza Koshy's favorite things. She even purchased the "Merry Christmas Ya Filthy Animal" sweater back in June, in anticipation of December.
So when YouTube approached her with an idea for a holiday special, it was an obvious yes.
"I freaking love the holidays," the 20-year-old YouTuber, who first rose to fame on Vine, told Mashable in a recent Facebook Live interview. "I've been psyched for them. It's my favorite time of year. This one was super easy to agree to. It gave me the opportunity to do longer content. It's a 35-minute special. Everything I come up with myself has been seven minutes and below. Shorter form ... I was super excited to create something longer and see if I could even do it." Read more...

Facebook Pulls Facebook Live API Access From Prisma
Photo- and video-editing application Prisma announced earlier this month that iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 users could stream live on Facebook with the iOS app's visual effects applied to their streams, but not anymore.
Natasha Lomas of TechCrunch reported that Facebook revoked Prisma's access to its application-programming interface, telling the app's developers:
Your app streams video from a mobile device camera, which can already be done through the Facebook app. The live video API is meant to let people publish live video content from other sources such as professional cameras, multicamera setups, games or screencasts.
Lomas pointed out that the frequently asked questions page in the Facebook Live API documentation for developers does not explicitly state that streaming is prohibited from smartphone cameras, and it also says the API can be used to apply special effects to videos, which is what Prisma does.
Prisma co-founder Aram Airapetyan spoke with Lomas, saying there are still big plans for Facebook Live at Prisma, and adding that a new social-focused release is slated for mid-December. He said:
We were trying to fix the issue, but Facebook has a strong policy. It only lets us broadcast to different cameras, drones. Our app is no drone or camera. So this means we cannot do it.
The priority is the social feature coming soon. But after we launch it, we'll seriously consider giving our users an alternative for Facebook Live.

Apple will replace batteries on iPhone 6S devices that are unexpectedly shutting down

Apple is now offering to replace batteries for the iPhone 6S, if users find that their devices are abruptly shutting down.
This is its second global repair offer, just days after the last one for the iPhone 6 Plus's screen issue.
"Apple has determined that a very small number of iPhone 6S devices may unexpectedly shut down. This is not a safety issue and only affects devices within a limited serial number range that were manufactured between September and October 2015," Apple said in a statement.
The program is applicable globally. Users can visit authorized Apple service centres and get the serial number checked, to confirm if their iPhone 6S is affected or not. Read more...

Facebook Open-Sources Community Cellular Manager
Facebook announced the open-sourcing of a solution aimed at furthering its mission of connecting the world.
Software engineers Kurtis Heimeri and Steve Muir and infrastructure strategist Shaddi Hasan announced in a blog post last week that the code for Community Cellular Manager is available via GitHub.
They described CCM as a software management and deployment suite that enables the operation of small-scale cellular networks, adding that it is compatible with the OpenCellular platform the social network introduced in June, as well as with third-party radio-access-network solutions and saying:
CCM is designed for reliable operation in environments with unreliable power and backhaul, providing fully disconnected operation for local voice and SMS services.
CCM requires only basic technical literacy, with a simple web interface for users of the system.
CCM makes coverage possible in areas where it was not economically viable with existing mobile network infrastructure: It can be run as a stand-alone system by small community network operators, or as a network service by larger operators that wish to leverage the power of community networking in rural areas.
Local agents use CCM's cloud user interface or SMS-based interfaces to manage their networks, allowing people in areas without coverage to install and operate the networks using local knowledge, infrastructure and tooling, dramatically lowering the expense of bringing access to areas far from traditional centralized infrastructure.
Heimeri, Muir and Hasan also detailed a CCM deployment:
In the Philippines, we've partnered with Globe Telecom and the University of the Philippines to practically validate this model of rural access. The first network utilizing the CCM software went up in a rural area lacking cellular coverage approximately 1.5 hours outside of Manila. The local community, primarily subsiding on agriculture and tourism, now has access to cellular connectivity. In conjunction with Globe and hardware vendor partners, we're in the process of scaling out this model of rural cellular access in the Philippines. Globe will leverage CCM to manage prepaid charging while forging business partnerships with organizations that can provide the local resources to carry out on ground operations.
