Climate forecasters: El Niño is here to stay

U.S. climate forecasters have dramatically raised the odds that El Niño will continue — and even intensify — through the fall, and perhaps through the end of the year

El Niño is a climate cycle that can alter weather patterns from East Africa to Florida and, on Thursday, the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said there is now about a 90% chance that it will continue through the summer, and a greater than 80% chance that it will last the rest of the year

El Niño events, particularly strong ones, can alter weather patterns worldwide, leading to more Pacific typhoons but fewer Atlantic hurricanes, and boost global average temperatures to make another record warm year more likely to take place. Read more...
