Nvidia's Shield box makes cutting the cord an attractive, if pricey, proposition

The Nvidia Shield is a gateway drug for would-be cord-cutters.

It's a media streaming box that pulls double-duty as a (somewhat limited) video game console, capable of turning a dumb TV into an incredibly smart one. The Android TV foundation brings a healthy, growing selection of apps and the Tegra X1 chip that powers the whole thing delivers a pleasant user experience.

The combined flexibility and power come at a high cost, however. The device itself retails for $200 (or $300, if you want to upgrade the built-in 16GB storage to 500GB), and some of its marquee features — notably 4K video and local game streaming — are useless without expensive equipment to support them.
