
A gray blanket of smog caused officials to declare an environmental emergency in Santiago, Chile, Monday, which shut down scores of businesses prohibiting hundreds of thousands of cars from the capital's streets.
It was the first environmental emergency declared in the city in 16 years.
The emergency was declared through Monday, but the city government said it would still order about 300,000 vehicles off the streets Tuesday.
The emergency decree also forced around 1,300 businesses to temporarily close and prohibits the use of lightwood heaters in the metropolitan area. The latest statement from the government, which highlights issues pertaining to public transportation, makes no mention on whether businesses would be affected Tuesday. Read more...
