Take a walk down La Rambla, a tree-lined pedestrian street, in August and just try to listen for someone speaking in Catalan. It's difficult — and sometimes impossible — as chatter in German, Portuguese and English drowns out local dialects.
The latest sign of Barcelona's exhaustion with its popularity among foreigners came Thursday, when the city's mayor temporarily halted the issuing of new licenses for tourist accommodations. The stoppage will be enforced, while new regulations are drawn up to govern a sector some say has grown too big in recent years. Read more...
