Dalai Lama turns 80: How the young spiritual leader came of age

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was born Lhamo Thondup to a family of farmers and horse traders in the Tibetan hamlet of Taktser on July 6, 1935. He had two sisters and four brothers who survived past infancy. Two of these brothers had already been recognized as reincarnations of high lamas, according to Tibetan Buddhism beliefs. Read more...
